The Wife and The Widow | Reformat

by Christian White

A deadly secret.
An island town.
A storm brewing.

Set against the backdrop of an island town in the dead of winter, The Wife and the Widow is a thriller told from two perspectives: Kate, a widow whose grief is compounded by what she learns about her husband’s secret life; and Abby, an island local who is forced to confront the evidence that her husband is a murderer.

But nothing on this island is quite as it seems. Only when these women are pushed to the edge can they uncover the whole, crashing truth about the men in their lives.

The Wife and the Widow is another mind-bending power read from Christian White. It’s a brilliant tale of deception and sacrifice from Australia’s most exciting new crime writer.

PRAISE for The Wife and the Widow

‘White is a master of the art of misdirection … he writes like a dream. The Wife and the Widow is one of the most original crime novels of the year and White is clearly a rising international star. Prepare to be dazzled.’
The Age

‘[Christian White] is the king of the twist, he’s becoming famous for it. I loved it even more than The Nowhere Child
Angela Bishop, Studio 10

‘Jaw-dropping … one of the best twists I’ve ever read.’
Michael Rowland, ABC News Breakfast

‘The Wife and the Widow is a ripping page-turner that stays with you long after you put it down.’ Domain

‘An exciting page-turning thriller with mechanisms that are all but invisible, and pace that is perfectly calibrated.’
The Australian

‘A meditation on grief and trauma as much as it is a gripping novel, The Wife and the Widow is to be especially recommended for its inventiveness and risk-taking in terms of plot. It is a risk that handsomely pays off for the attentive reader.’ Australian Book Review

‘ Given how compulsively readable The Nowhere Child was, claims that The Wife and the Widow is even better will likely be met with scepticism, but for me this is an even more accomplished follow-up. A gut-punch twist no one will see coming, a plot that hooks from the very first page, and a conclusion that will leave readers breathless. The Wife and the Widow cannot be missed.’
J.P. Pomare, author of Call Me Evie and In the Clearing

‘I read it in one sitting and didn’t get much sleep. So be warned. This book will keep you up until the very last page. And it was worth it. Thrilling, brilliant storytelling, unputdownable … Christian White has another hit on his hands’
Better Reading

‘This is a flat-out excellent second book, riveting from the start, twisted and clever.’  Readings

‘Dark, atmospheric, and full of twists and turns. 4 stars.’
Who magazine

The Wife and the Widow establishes [Christian White] as one of our best new talents … his trademark style and energy will be enough to keep readers up all night. 4 1/2 stars’
