A Sprinkle of Sadie is the first book in a brand-new series for junior fiction readers from author Lana Spasevski and illustrator Joanie Stone. Here, Lana gives us the inside scoop on all things Sadie.
Sadie is a superstar seven-year-old baker with a big heart and a signature streak of bold blue hair. In each book, Sadie creates sweet and colourful recipes for her family, friends and community, but quite often things don’t go to plan.
Sadie is a special kind of character who embodies today’s generation of kids. She’s kind, compassionate and generous. Her world is bright and diverse, with her stories set in a relatable and multicultural neighbourhood.
In the first book in the series, A Sprinkle of Sadie, Sadie needs to make a birthday cake for her police officer mum, cupcakes for a community fundraiser and an Easter cake to welcome a new teacher to her school. Sadie’s desire to make things better for others spurs her on to find a way to turn even the biggest disaster into something brilliant.
I hope the Sadie series will help inspire a lifetime love of reading. The books are filled with early literacy tools to help build confidence, including a 3-in-1 story structure to feed the reading bug, bold breakout text to highlight trickier words and a balance of basic and complex sentence structures to suit a broad readership.
I started writing the Sadie series at an interesting time in my life. I was working in the marketing department of the world’s biggest food company. I looked after some of Australians’ favourite baking ingredients like dairy, chocolate, flour and cake mixes. I spent many days working up ideas for new baking products, testing recipes and going to food photo shoots with some of Australia’s most loved bakers.
My daughter was just starting to read independently and she was fascinated by the baked treats that I was bringing home from work. At the same time, my daughter and I were also planning a cake stall to help raise funds for her local preschool library. It was then that the idea of a sassy seven-year-old who loves creating in the kitchen came to me. Sadie is so generous, thoughtful, creative and she quickly learns to embrace the imperfections of her creations and make them into something even more special. Her world is bright, diverse and messy and it has been such a joy to come back to it in each unique short story.
